Windows Optimization Guide

These are the modules for windows optimization guide (ebook)

  • What Makes Computer Slow? – This is not a simple question to answer. In that same way you cannot provide a simple answer to “Why do cars break down?”, or “why do people fall sick”. There are many components that make up a computer and any of these components may be defective.
  • RAM and HDD Explained – If you often confuse Memory capacity with hard drive capacity then read the analogy below, it’ll make things clearer, in less technical terms.
  • Disable Hard Drive Indexing – The Hard Disk Drive is mainly a storage system for your computer. Every installed application, video, photo, document etc. resides on the HDD. Many people get this confused with RAM.
  • Disable Startup Items – Whenever you power-on your PC there may be numerous computer programs, that you may not be aware of, running in the background. Many of these small programs, 90% of the time, are not wanted.
  • Disable Background Services – Microsoft has a vision, which is to make every computer plug and play. This means that whenever you buy a new Samsung camera, you would not have to install anything on your computer, just plug the camera, printer, phone etc and it will be recognised and it will work as you want.
  • Remove Malicious Software – If I get a penny for every time someone suspected a virus to be responsible for slowing down their computer, I’d be a millionaire by now. The truth is that 99% of the time, it was not a virus.
  • Disable Cosmetic Effects – All aesthetic features consume memory and the more cosmetic effects you have on your system, the slower it becomes. Let me show you how to deal with this on Windows XP

Windows Optimization Guide (2)

These are the modules for windows optimization guide (ebook)

  • Solid State Drive – In the previous chapter, I discussed how HDD, as a result of its moving parts, contribute to the performance issues of your computer. The seek time (the time it takes the header to locate files on the platters) increases as files are fragmented and scattered on your hard drive.
  • Secured Web Browsing – 99% of all computers are connected to the internet. Malware, Virus, Adware, Spyware, Add-ons, Start-up items etc. are the result of downloading stuff from the internet.
  • Toolbars, Plugins and Addons – You are the one to blame for this. Sometimes during installation of a program, another program is bundled with it, but it’s up to the user to tick/untick a little checkbox that ask you if you want to include the bundled program in your installation
  • Upgrade RAM and HDD – The good news is that both HDD and RAM can be upgraded very easily. Even a 5 year old can do it (just kidding, but it is a very simple task). Usually all computer hard drives and memories can be upgraded (except for in rare cases).
  • Guest & Standard Accounts – Another protection against malicious software is to use a Guest account for browsing. Guest Accounts have very limited privileges therefore it is almost impossible to install any application on the computer from a Guest Account
  • Blue Screen of Death – Everyone, no matter how technically savvy or reckless you are, you will experience a BSOD at some point of time. Have you seen the screen shot below before? If you have, well, “Welcome to the World of Microsoft Windows”.
  • Windows Update Options – Windows operating systems are known for their security vulnerabilities. They are the most unsecured operating systems and whenever vulnerable loop holes are discovered by criminals and hackers, Microsoft provides updates to secure those security holes
  • Backup Your Computer – Every major operating system has a built-in Backup utility. You should take regular backups of important documents because you will never know when your computer will crash.
  • Boot Hangup and Freezing – Computer hangs or freezes for so many reasons, and from my 9 years of experience, most computer boot hang-ups happen as a result of driver incompatibilities, driver errors or hardware failures.
  • Using System Restore – Another one of my favourite troubleshooting strategies is to use the built in restoration tool. Whenever you launch this tool (see image below), you will be presented with various dates (past dates) that your computer can be restored to
  • Disk Cleanup Utility – Freeing space on hard disk and defragmenting the hard drive is a great way to make your HDD more efficient. Sometimes there are unclaimed free spaces on the HDD and you have to claim it and clean up your hard drive regularly for best efficiency
  • Mutiple Boot/OS System – It is not written in hard stone anywhere, but one of my strategies of keeping a fast and responsive computer is to have two or more operating systems on one computer. One for browsing and the other for doing work and the third one for compatibility testing
  • Solving Overheating Problems – If I got one dollar for every time someone rang to complain about overheating laptop, I’d be a billionaire by now. Laptops can overheat for following reasons.
  • Advanced Startup Options – Windows XP and Windows Vista Advanced Options menus are very useful for troubleshooting. A friend called me one day, his computer wasn’t booting and it was showing the blue screen of death.
  • Boot With Linux Live CD – 95% of computers run on Microsoft Windows Operating systems, the rest of 5% run on Mac OSX (from Apple) and a tiny fraction runs on Linux. Linux is considered to be the most secured operating system, and it’s free
  • Repair Your Operating System – I got a call from a lady; she got my number from a friend. After 5 minutes of general chatting she told me she was experiencing a blue screen (BSOD). I asked her what was the last thing that she remembered before this happened
  • Using the Recovery Console – Checking and repairing a disk for errors can sometimes eradicate problems, and I can confidently say that,I have repaired nothing less than 30 computers with this solution alone. The command chkdsk /r may be good enough for your blue screen error problem
  • Partition Your Hard Drive – Partitioning is simply dividing a single physical hard drive into multiple logical hard drives. Let me explain. If your computer comes with 120GB HDD, you can partition it into 2 logical drives.
  • Computer BIOS Explained – BIOS is the first black screen that you see whenever you power on your computer. The function is self-descriptive, it checks to makes sure that all peripherals such as the keyboard and the mouse, components such as RAM and HDD are all present before it hands over the job to the operating system
  • Performing Fresh Installation – Let’s face it, sometimes it’s better to start afresh. Starting afresh will give your computer and its various components a breath of fresh air. Think of it as buying a new car. A new car will outperform a car that has been thoroughly serviced.
  • Hardware Failure & Warranty – I am sorry to tell you this but sometimes there’s just nothing you can do. Even myself as an I.T guy, I get in to this position sometimes. 3 months back I was experiencing a vertical line on my screen, initially it will occur and freeze the computer
